Publisher’s Summary: “The team behind the smash-hit crossover series is back to reunite the Dark Knight and the Heroes in a Half-Shell. When Donatello goes looking for a new mentor to help him improve his fighting skills, he opens a doorway to another reality, hoping to summon the Turtles’ one-time ally, Batman. But instead, he gets sent to Gotham City and someone else comes through the open portal—Bane! Suddenly, there’s a new gang boss in New York and he’s out to unite all the other bad guys under him. Can Donnie get back in time and bring Batman with him to help his brothers before Bane causes irreparable destruction? Co-published with IDW.”
The first issue of this sequel mini-series picks up in the aftermath of Shredder’s and Ra’s Al Ghul’s defeat. The action starts on page one and keeps a frantic pace for the entire first half. Luckily, we’re given three whole pages to catch our breath before returning to a sprint for the remainder of the issue. I don’t know if this is a sustainable pace but it’s more than enough to create excitement for the rest of the series.
Coming as no surprise to anyone who has read the first Batman/TMNT crossover, James Tynion IV’s writing is near perfect. Batman is short and to the point and the turtles’ dialogue is drenched in their personalities. Tynion IV also uses the turtles’ characteristic mid-fight chattiness to deliver important information while simultaneously giving us almost too much action to fit in a single issue.
How do you balance the dark and brooding vibe of Batman with the lighthearted nature of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Just ask Freddie Williams II. Same as the artwork from the first series, it walks a fine line between cartoony/unrefined and gritty/detailed.
The Bottom Line:
Having this creative team together again, working on a follow-up their incredible crossover, is like an extremely early birthday gift. It’s only one issue but I can already feel like we’re going to be given another can’t miss collection. You don’t need to be a super fan of either franchise to enjoy this, but if you are…….STRAP IN!!!
