Star Wars with a hint of horror! In this miniseries, we are treated to a showcase of stories in the Star Wars universe told with the same atmosphere and tone as any horror or ghost story, very reminiscent of Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Star Wars franchise has limitless potential for storytelling, so seeing something depart from the usual Jedi/Sith conflict is always an interesting direction.
The artwork is obviously the standout here, with a gorgeous cover to boot. A giant spider Darth Maul is a clear winner for a horrifying monster, but the issue is at it’s best when it’s grainy and dark, either in the introduction on Mustafar or in the cave for the bulk of the issue. Unfortunately the issue spends a lot of time in the daylight, so the scare factor isn’t quite as tuned as it could be. Nevertheless this is sure to delight younger Star Wars fans wanting something new from the universe, and looks to be a promising series from the get-go.
The Bottom Line:
Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle is the perfect return to Star Wars ghost stories that will be sure to delight younger fans and possibly interest older ones. Will you step into Vader’s Castle?
