NBD!
Sabrina Spellman is the new girl at Greendale High School. She may seem like your average teenager, but the young Spellman has one tiny little secret; Sabrina is half witch. As Sabrina negotiates her way through high school, taking down bullies, making friends, and passing all her classes, she’s also finding her way through the mystical arts. Luckily, her cat Salem and new bestie are here to help her out.
Kelly Thompson has a gift for writing classic characters. In Sabrina the Teenage Witch (2019- ) #1, Thompson strikes that delicate balance between the character fans know and the one she’s creating in her work. On top of that, Thompson’s script is impeccable. Packed with mystery, suspense, romance, and teenage growing pains, the debut issue offers readers a little bit of everything. Her Sabrina character is equal parts sass and quick wit, with just a dash of teenage insecurity.
Playing with the idea of monsters, Thompson’s script weaves together the natural and the supernatural on multiple levels, giving the issue added depth. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (2019-) #1 will hook readers from the first to last panel, as readers are swept up in Sabrina’s world.
Veronica and Andy Fish’s artwork complete the issue. Their art introduces readers to Thompson’s version of Sabrina and cast, drawing on various elements from Sabrina through the year. Similarly, Greendale appears mundane at first glance, but there’s more than meets the eye.
The Bottom Line
Sabrina the Teenage Witch (2019-) #1 is full of twists and turns; Kelly Thompson’s script playful, but packed with mystery and intrigue, and her ability to reimagine classic characters is put on full display.
