Publisher’s Summary: Line up for this all-new maxiseries set on Earth X, where the Nazis won World War II! Twenty years after invading and occupying America, Germany wiped out all metahuman resistance, including the original Freedom Fighters. Fast-forward to the present day, and a new team of Freedom Fighters emerges to challenge the Nazi occupation once again. But if they’re to have any chance of victory, they’re going to need Uncle Sam-who disappeared after his original team was killed. The 12-part epic “Death of a Nation” storyline kicks off here!

Review:

“Welcome to Earth-x, where Nazi Germany’s metahuman war machine conquered the planet…”

The Freedom Fighters are bringing America back, and I am pumped. Everyone likes reading a good ‘what-if’ story from time to time, and while we’ve all read plenty of ‘what if the Nazis won’ stories, Freedom Fighters (2018-) #1 feels fresh and inspired.

Despite taking several pages to get off the ground and moving, Robert Venditti conjures great interest and sets a dark and dire tone that’s sure to linger throughout the series. Once the PlaSStic Men are introduced into the equation, the story takes off and begins to generate great momentum.

Artist Eddy Barrows does a fine job illustrating everything from portraits of Hitler to dramatic shots of Uncle Same to burning Nazi corpses; Freedom Fighters (2018-) #1 is visually impressive and I am eager to see how Barrows will use his skills over the course of the next eleven issues.

Surely, readers and critics will be divided into two groups: those who enjoy watching Uncle Sam throw punches while making apple pie jokes, and those who don’t. Regardless of which camp you belong to, there is no denying that the ‘what-if’ that lies at the heart of this series is thought-provoking, and that Freedom Fighters (2018-) #1 is a well-crafted comic book.

The Bottom Line:

Freedom Fighters may not be the series that we want, but it’s the series that we need…okay, it’s the series that we want too. Freedom Fighters (2018-) #1 is a strong debut that leaves readers wanting more ‘what-if’ action.
