Title: Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth Special (2018-) #1
Words: Scott Snyder
Art: Francis Manapul, Scott Godlewski, and Howard Porter
Published: November 28, 2018
Publisher’s Summary: “DROWNED EARTH” finale! Aquaman faces the truth behind Atlantis’ past and must find a way to reclaim the power of his birthright or watch the floodwaters drown everything he has ever loved! With the world at stake and the Justice League on their last sea legs in their battle against the Ocean Lords, Arthur makes the ultimate sacrifice to return balance to land and sea!
Atlanteans were fed fake-news, and one can only live in an underwater city of lies for so long before history, or, in this case, an Ocean Lord, or three, comes a’knockin’, looking to take back what’s rightfully theirs.
Unfortunately, the publisher’s summary points out that Aquaman makes the ‘ultimate sacrifice’ in order to bring this epic war to an end and half-spoils the issue. Regardless, the events that transpire leading up to said ultimate sacrifice are well-worth reading.
Combining sky-high stakes with the almost-sadist-like treatment of well-known characters has become the cornerstone of modern Scott Snyder superhero stories. And while reading said stories, that are void of hope until their final moments, could be draining, Snyder makes sure to add balance to each of his epic arcs with wit, self-awareness, and story moments/elements that are downright awesome. In Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth Special (2018-) #1, not only do we have a Death Kraken, but we also have a leather-clad, eye-patch-wearing, pirate Superman fighting alongside a fish-faced Flash. Cool, right?
In addition to being a non-stop action fest of nautical goodness, Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth Special (2018-) #1, thanks to the artists who worked on bringing Snyder’s script to life, is gorgeous. Snyder’s script is full-realized and presented in a visually impressive fashion.
All in all, the Drowned Earth arc has been exciting. Each issue was well-crafted and will ultimately make for a pleasurable second-read. Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth Special (2018-) #1 offers a fitting conclusion to this arc, and gives readers good reason to revisit Drowned Earth when it’s collected into a single book.
The Bottom Line:
Packed with action and stunning artwork, Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth Special (2018-) #1 offers a fitting conclusion to the Drowned Earth arc
