Title: Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1
Publisher: IDW/ Marvel
Words: Delilah S. Dawson
Art: Fico Ossio
Publication Date: November 28, 2018
Publisher’s Summary: Readers of all ages can get tangled up in these all new adventures of Spider-Man and his astonishing friends! Peter Parker has thrown down with deadly villains and legendary heroes, but high school life might be his greatest challenge yet. Luckily, he has a shot at making the grade with a little help from his new friends… Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy! A Marvelous new era begins here!
“That’s another thing super-powers can’t help: the awkwardness of small talk.”
Giant mutant dogs have started popping up around Midtown, and it’s up to Spider-man to save the day, but not without a little help from his new friend, Miles Morales. All the while, Gwen Stacey takes photographs on her cellphone and fights to find a story.
After a quick, but exciting, opening scene that introduces readers to Marvel’s web-slinger, it doesn’t take long for Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Gwen Stacy to find themselves sitting in a room together, making introductions, competing with one another, in an internship at the Daily Bugle, for a coveted interview with Tony Stark. And while the only teen with a costumed alter-ego at the start of this issue is Peter Parker, it becomes clear that there is only a matter of time before the three begin working together outside of the classroom.
Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1 feels like an introductory issue, but it wastes no time getting started. Writer Delilah S. Dawson’s script is sharp, witty, and packed with enough action to generate some serious momentum moving forward. As an adult reader, I feared that there wouldn’t be enough story here for me to become interested, but that’s not the case.
Fico Ossio’s artwork is stunning, and is sure to captivate readers young and old. Characters are expressive and pop from the page, and each panel is packed with enough detail to immerse readers in their fresh, yet familiar, settings.
Surely, this series is intended to introduce Spider-Man to a new audience and make becoming a fan less intimidating. Partnering with IDW was a wise decision made by Marvel, and frankly, comes at the perfect time with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse being release in a few weeks. The animated film will surely attract a new group of potential readers, and Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1 will be an ideal starting point for them.
The Bottom Line:
Laced with wit, humorous exchanges, and stunning artwork, Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1, is an accessible, all-ages comic book that exceeds expectations. Despite being intended for a younger audience, there’s enough action and story here to interest older readers as well.
