Publisher’s Summary: What dreams may come? Welcome to the Dreamside, a magical realm where oddities dwell and imaginations thrive. But is this unusual new paradise truly all that it seems on the surface? Together, Faith and Doctor Mirage are about to find that behind the frills and fantasy, there may lurk nightmares…and they’re hunting for Animalia! Don’t stray too far from the light, because Eisner-nominated writer Jody Houser (Mother Panic) and rising star MJ Kim (FAITH’S WINTER WONDERLAND SPECIAL #1) are conjuring up some truly terrifying scares for Valiant’s highest-soaring hero!
Faith and Doctor Mirage have arrived in the Dreamside, and it’s cheerier than anticipated. The two are surprised by their surroundings, but cautious about letting their guard down. As they move through the Dreamside they quickly learn that things are not always what they appear at first glance. Joined by Hwen and Faith’s double, the group sets off on a quest of epic proportions.
Jody Houser continues produce a superior story in Faith: Dreamside. In Faith: Dreamside #3 the other side is revealed, and it’s Alice in Wonderland 2.0, where everything is familiar, but distorted. Houser defies all expectations in her depiction of the Dreamside, subverting reader expectations. Of course, everything is not as it appears at first glance, and the Dreamside is a deeply deceptive place. Simultaneously, as Houser crafts the Dreamside, she subtly shifts the focus of the series, from rescue mission to personal quest, creating an introspective journey for Faith.
MJ Kim’s art creates Houser’s upbeat, yet creepy story, borrowing from elements of classic quest stories like The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and Lord of the Rings. Kim includes a yellow brick road, Cheshire cat smile, and dragon to top off a land full of talking trees and flowers that teeter between brimming with color to utter decay. In an issue full of questions, Kim uses the art to illustrate the subtle balance between life and death, hero and human.
The Bottom Line:
Faith: Dreamside #3 is a dazzling display of story development and artistic expression. Jody Houser moves the story along, pushing the series into a new direction. MJ Kim complements Houser’s script with vivid and detailed imagery, creating the unique world of Dreamside.
