Title: Bettie Page Vol. 2 #1
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Julius Ohta
Publication Date: November 21, 2018
Publisher’s Summary: “The brand-new Queen of England has mysteriously vanished, and British Intelligence needs a helping hand from the world’s greatest model spy! Can Bettie the First find Elizabeth the Second before the news gets out and panics all of Great Britain? Are UFOs involved? David Avallone (Elvira: Mistress of the Dark) and Julius Ohta (Sherlock Holmes) show you all the stuff they cut out of the THE CROWN, as Bettie returns in THE PRINCESS AND THE PINUP!”
Bettie Page is back from her run-in with the tentacle god and she’s ready for her next big alien adventure. This time she’s across the pond in jolly ol’ London working with British Intelligence on a case of royal importance. Who are these aliens? More importantly, what do they want with the queen? Never fear, Bettie Page is on the case!
Bettie Page Vol. 2 #1 is another fast paced, alien-packed adventure from the bombshell spy herself. David Avallone crafts an intriguing, delightful tale that’s straight from outer space. The story is typical Bettie Page, heavy on the spy drama with extra points for style and the U.F.O is straight out of a ‘50s film. Avallone’s script is downright fun, with surprise characters like Winston Churchill and a missing royal.
Julius Ohta’s art looks like something right out of a ‘50s noir film, complete with secret rendezvous, U.F.O., and Bettie Page’s iconic style. The issue is a touch on the gritty side, emphasizing the film noir style.
The Bottom Line:
Bettie Page Vol. 2 #1 is a smashing success, taking Bettie Page across the pond to hunt down a royal-napping U.F.O. David Avallone infuses just enough alien encounter to keep the issue faced paced, while also crafting an interesting backstory. Julius Ohta complements Avallone’s script with detailed panels that capture Bettie Page’s one of a kind, spy style. I’m looking forward to getting to the bottom of this caper with Bettie Page!
