“The road to the dark side is paved with good intentions…”

Review:

Faith is on a mission to help her friend Monica, no matter the danger to herself. But she never expected what was coming next. After tracking down a renowned para-psychologist, Dr. Fong, Faith and Monica reveal the specters that haunt Monica at night. At first, Dr. Fong believes these specters are manifestations of guilt that Monica has conjured herself. But as night descends and the specters arrive, Dr. Fong and Faith realize how horribly mistaken they were. As Monica’s life hangs in the balance, it’s up to Faith to travel into the Dreamside and save her young friend.

Jody Houser has a tremendous gift for writing complex narratives. Faith Dreamside is an intense story about friendship and loyalty. In just the first two issues, Houser has packed the storyline with nuanced detail, crafting a well rounded story for the journey that lies ahead. Faith Dreamside #2 marks the descent of Faith into the Dreamside. Based on the glimpse we saw from the specters, the Dreamside is a dark place that will test the wit and will our hero. No matter the journey, though, Houser has accounted for a full cast of characters, each uniquely qualified to travel into the Dreamside and save Monica. Accompany the storyline is Houser’s dialogue from Faith, which depicts Faith’s humor and wit, along with her particular level of nerd. Rounding out the storyline is a subtle, yet thoughtful, discussion on grief and guilt.

The art in this series is detailed and vivid, full of Faith expressive face and raw emotions. The page where Faith attempts to save Monica from the Dreamside is powerful, as we see our hero try with all her power to keep Monica safe. The bond the pair has formed is fully realized in this page. Beyond words, Kim makes the reader feel Faith’s emotions, the fear and uncertainty and determination.

The Bottom Line:

Faith Dreamside #2 is a powerful follow-up to the series debut issue. Jody Houser crafts a superior storyline, woven with supernatural elements. Complementing Houser’s script is MJ Kim’s artwork, emotionally charged and detailed. I look forward to what the pair have in store for their depiction of the Dreamside.
