Publisher’s Summary: The KGBeast lives! The Russian super-assassin is back—but under whose orders? Does he have a specific mission, or is this simply some leftover Cold War mayhem? Nyet, comrade—it has to do with Bruce Wayne’s recent court case involving Mr. Freeze. Something is rotten in Gotham, and you can still smell it, even if it’s on ice!
After a slew of emotional examinations and weighing of relationships, the direction of this series has changed; the KGBeast is in Gotham and he has one of the city’s vigilante’s in his sights.
Last time we saw them, Batman and Nightwing took on some of Gotham City’s more ridiculous villains in an issue that offered yet another examination and further exploration of one of Bruce Wayne–and Batman’s–many relationships. Here, however, readers are treated with a story that’s packed tight with action and anxiety-inspiring tension. Unbeknownst to Batman and Nightwing, the KGBeast takes aim while the team takes on some interesting foes; this, of course, creates an interesting and exciting read.
Tom King has thus far done a fine job in examining the Dark Knight, and his closest relationships. And while this issue, as well as the next several, will continue to examine, it’s clear that King is changing pace and taking the series in a slightly different direction. King paced this issue quite well and managed to expertly build tension throughout.
Tony Daniel’s artwork is stunning. His line work is sharp and intricate, and he depicts a rainy night in Gotham City like no other. Batman (2016-) #55 is filled with highly-detailed illustrations that are worthy of second and third examinations; this issue is pure eye candy.
The Bottom Line:
Packed tight with tension and intensity, Batman (2016-) #55 builds to an epic conclusion that’ll leave readers picking their jaws off of the floor or, at the very least, excited and eager for Issue #56.
