Review:

Told from a new narrator’s point of view, the conclusion to the Descenders series starts on a with the end of everything. The Harvest has arrived, but Tim-21 is determined to save the world, human and machine-kind alike. However, the machines see things differently, a world of turmoil, greed, and war.  No place for a machine to have to live, under-appreciated and enslaved. What can young Tim-21 do?  After everything Tim-21 has been through, was it all for nothing?

The conclusion to Descenders is an emotional rollercoaster for both characters and readers. After following the series and routing for the little robot, this issue really hit you in the heart. Jeff Lemire has a way of writing that brings the reader intense sadness and pain all the while instilling a new hope for the future of the universe. Lemire’s space saga comes to a dramatically, brilliant close, but the final story is more of a new beginning than ending. And though there is despair through much of the panels, it is not without a silver lining. From it’s beginning, Lemire has dazzled us with his human-like robot, creating a character that, at times, appears more human than the actual humans. But it is not until this final issue that we truly understand Tim-21’s connection to the other characters, his devotion to human-kind.

Throughout its run, Dustin Nguyen has perfectly crafted the world of Descender, and this issue is no different. His art blends the written and visual images, crafting a seamless experience for the reader, and this issue was no different. The colors in the final page inspire, beyond Lemire’s words, that this is ultimately a story of hope.

The Bottom Line:

Descender #32 completes the series’ run, but it also establishes the next series. The issue beautifully brings closure to the Descender storyline, while opening up new plot points for the following series. Lemire’s words and Nguyen’s art create the final, emotional ending for Tim-21’s journey.
