Review:

Our tiny hero is faced with his most difficult challenge yet: coming face-to-face with the Descenders. As the powers that be converge around Tim-21 and his companions, Tim must find a way to convince the Descenders that humanity is worth saving. Just when luck appears to be on Tim’s side, and the Descenders change their mind, fate steps in with other ideas. What will happen to Tim-21? What will become of the world? What will the Descenders do next?

Life has not proved easy for Tim, but one goal has kept him moving forward, even in the face of innumerable odds: save humanity. Jeff Lemire’s particular knack for storytelling remains at the heart of Descenders, as he tests his characters on every page in every panel. After the long anticipated meeting between Tim and the Descenders, humanity appears more at risk than ever. Lemire toys with readers as he produces hope on one page, just to tear it away on the next. This hope feels almost utterly lost at the end of the issue, and yet readers will find themselves holding on to those last threads. There is something about the character Lemire crafts in Tim-21, perhaps it is his childhood innocence or his unyielding determination to save a world that had previously wanted him destroyed, but he truly inspires hope.

Of course this could only be possible with Dustin Nguyen’s artwork. His creation of Tim, Telsa, the Descenders, and all the others really brings Lemire’s world to life. The panels featuring Tim and the Descenders are visually stunning. His art has consistently been an anchor to Lemire’s words.

As the stage is set for the final showdown and tensions are high, Tim-21 remains a beacon of hope at the center of a dark tale. Who will survive the following issues? That answer is still unknown, but Tim-21 is working hard to ensure that humanity will be spared.

The Bottom Line:

Lemire has consistently built suspense into his story, but this may be his finest issue yet. With the cards on the table and the players all in place, Tim-21 must beat the odds to save the world. And I think he might just pull it off.
