Sherlock Holmes continues his search for the missing Michael Williams. As Holmes and Watson draw closer to answers, new layers of the mystery begin to take shape. However, things are not all that they appear, the case is sure to grow darker before the ingenious detective unravels the mystery. Meanwhile, Professor Moriarty is working out his own nefarious plan, the details of which are unclear.
What I enjoy most about Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man is Moore and Reppion’s ability to carve out an excellent mystery. They build on pieces of information, not to the point of divulging answers, but enough to keep your interest piqued. Sherlock and Watson are iconic characters, both written well, but it is the writer’s approach to the mystery that has me really engaged. There’s definitely intrigue, but I think it goes a little further than that. The pieces aren’t adding up yet. And that is what is going to keep readers engaged, along with Moriarty’s sudden appearance. As for the art, Julius Ohta perfectly recreates Victorian London; the style of clothes and the settings feel extremely authentic. The colors are muted, but not too soft. Shades of beige, greens, grey, and blue make up the world of Sherlock Holmes, setting the tone for the issue.
This is a really great read. Moore and Reppion’s storyline is dense, yet interesting, a web that the reader works to break down. Ohta’s art compliments the story, creating the atmosphere around the story, like a fog settling around London.
The Bottom Line:
Get yourself a copy. If you love mysteries this is definitely the series for you. Sherlock Holmes: The Vanishing Man #2 layers the story with new snippets of clues, keeping the story fresh and interesting.
