Full disclosure, Goosebumps terrified me as a child, so I’ve only really become a fan of the series over the last few years. Even as a relatively new fan, I know that Download & Die has all the markers to become an excellent addition to the Goosebumps legacy.
Vaughn creates a fresh storyline that incorporates everything fans love about Goosebumps, classic villains, young-adult storylines, and scares that make you jump, but let you sleep at night. Vaughn uses these as building blocks to craft her 21st century scary story, complete with possessed cellphones and scary social media. Her characters are equally rich, and represent the real life struggles of young adults, friendships, romance, and school drama.
Working in conjunction with these classic elements and new storyline, Wong and Farrell visually represent the story is classic Goosebumps colors, adding a mildly upbeat side to the chills and thrills. The images are detailed, with clean lines and bold colors, which help create the world of Download & Die. Each character has a distinct look and the villains are fun and not too scary, making for an young reader age appropriate tale all around.
With all new scares and classic elements, Goosebumps Download and Die is sure to become a favorite among Goosebumps fans. This critic is looking forward to the rest of the series to see how Mitra and friends thwart the bad guy and save the day.
