Title: Batman (2016-) #47
Publisher: DC
Script: Tom King
Art: Tony S. Daniel
Publication Date: May 16th, 2018

Publisher’s Summary: “THE TRAVELERS” part three! As Booster Gold, Batman and Catwoman zero in on the time anomaly, what they find and their actions to correct it will have ramifications on all of the DC Universe. Tom King and Master Class artist Tony S. Daniel end their first story with a bang that will tee up the next big development in the Batman/Catwoman romance.

Review:

DC fans and long-time readers know all too well that when a character’s timeline is altered or its flow is interrupted in some way, chaos ensues; “The Gift,” followed suit and in typical Booster Gold fashion, the situation worsened exponentially and in direct proportion to his the amount of effort he put toward righting his wrong. And while we knew that, eventually, Booster Gold was going to clean up his mess and fix the timeline, there’s a wedding to be had after all, exactly how he was going to succeed and what lengths he would have to go to remained a mystery up until this issue’s conclusion.

What makes this story arc so interesting is the inevitability of success and Tom King’s ability to completely discredit said inevitability and, in doing so, produce a story capable of thrilling readers. Chaos ensued, as expected, but throughout these issues, knowing that everything would work out, eventually, didn’t detract from the reading experience. Accomplishing this feat, making a story interesting and entertaining despite readers’ knowledge of the tale’s ending, is impressive.

Artist Tony S. Daniel did a fantastic job illustrating this issue; his highly-detailed style, for me, is ideal when it comes to illustrating modern superhero comics. As pointed out in the publisher’s summary, this first story truly is a masterclass in modern comic book illustration.

The Bottom Line:

This story arc’s conclusion is predictable but the way in which said conclusion is reached is anything but that; overall, “The Gift” remained thought-provoking and entertaining throughout its run, and Batman #47 offered readers a fitting end to a memorable arc.
