Publisher’s Summary: “THE END OF FOREVER” part two! Following the destruction of their base of operations, the Immortal Men find themselves on the defensive! Their only hope rests with an emerging metahuman named Caden Park—but the evil Conquest has gotten to Caden first! Will the remaining few battle-ravaged Immortal Men be able to rescue their young would-be savior? And what connection do Caden’s tactile telepathic abilities have to the survival of humanity?
Review: While introducing characters into the DCU that, apparently, already have rich backstories and a history of working in the shadows and pulling strings behind the scenes, has the potential of being great, doing so also runs the risk of alienating readers from what would otherwise be great new characters. In this, the second issue of The Immortal Men, readers are given some more backstory, but unfortunately, they’re not provided with enough information to justify reading the story and sticking around to seeing how things will play out.
We have characters that are interesting, but I’m not sure why I should care about them or whether or not they succeed in accomplishing their goals. Caden Parl’s life is at stake, but why should I care? As of yet, I haven’t been given good reason to care about what happens; I’m interested in learning more about these characters. but one can only stay interested for so long before a yearning for more turns into a yearning for something new.
I was disappointed to see that Jim Lee didn’t, for whatever reason, end up illustrating this book. Thankfully, artist Ryan Benjamin did a fine job with illustrating this issue, and while his artwork was similar to Jim Lee’s, it just wasn’t the same and wasn’t what I was expecting.
The Bottom Line: Packed with interesting characters and not much else, The Immortal Men is shaping up to be another New Age of Heroes miss; there’s still time, but it’s not looking good. Also, where’s Jim Lee?
