Review:

Issue #2 of Goosebumps: Download and Die continues the tale of teenager Mitra and her seemingly possessed phone. Issue #1 did a nice job introducing the characters and setting the stage for some creepiness that was sure to result from some demonic electronics. There are definitely some strange things happening as a result of the phone including an animated skeleton, a pink cat, and a ghost like boy. Probably the most interesting part for me is how the phone seem to be communicating with Mitra, it telepathically tells her that others want to take the phone from her and is reminiscent of Gollum and the ring of power fom the Lord of the Rings. A “my precious” line in a future issue would fit just fine. I am interested to see just how much these events will ramp up.

While the writing continues to develop the characters and unwrap the story, I was looking for a little more elaboration of the background of the phone. It is a compliment to Jen Vaughn that she, after having created this weird phone born out of Steve Job’s worst nightmares, has me wanting more. There are also so many strange occurrences happening that it is tough to see how they will tie together. Again, there is plenty of time but I was looking for a few more clues. The art does a nice job complementing the script and moving the story along, Wong’s illustrations focus in on characters’ faces and conveys their emotions clearly.

The Bottom Line:

Goosebumps: Download and Die #2 continues to ramp up the weird factor. The premise and strong art makes this an issue that is intriguing and fun but is a little unsatisfying in exposing more of the main character…the phone from hell.
