Publisher’s Summary: The re-creation of Spawn’s arch villain THE VIOLATOR…A NEW LOOK! NEW POWERS!
Spawn has a plan, and part of that plan may just involve giving himself up to authorities after kidnapping the rapper Bonz Chillin’. Issue #284 starts out with an exceptional introduction from Todd McFarlane; in just a few short lines, McFarlane is able to set the pace and tone of the issue with captivating prose. The intensity level remains incredibly high throughout Spawn #284 until the book ends with a nightmarish scene that is sure to make a lasting impressions on readers. Artist Jason Shawn Alexander does a fine job in creating the dark and gritty feel that a title like Spawn requires; his dark and (almost) disorienting style makes for a reading experience that is unique and fitting.
I’m not quite sure how the publisher’s summary of the book fits in here, but Spawn #284 is a solid read nonetheless. Here, the stage is being set for bigger and badder things to come, so now is a good time to start reading if you’ve missed a few issues.
The Bottom Line:
Despite being in the middle of a story, Spawn #284 is quite accessible for newcomers looking to jump into the series. The stage is being set for bigger and badder things, but this book is by no means a transition issue. McFarlane’s script and Alexander’s illustrations make this one worthy of a re-read.
