When trying to sum up Oblivion Song #1, the world brilliant comes to mind. From its first page through to its last, Issue #1 of this exciting new series from Robert Kirkman is impressive and makes for an amazing reading experience. As one would expect, the concept behind this series is intense and well-rounded, and Kirkman’s ever-improving storytelling skills are put on display. This being the case, Oblivion Song #1 moves at a blistering pace while simultaneously entangling readers in a web of otherness and outworldly sci-fi goodness that has to be experienced to be believed.

Whilst the publisher describes Oblivion as a hellscape of sorts, I found my brief trip to Oblivion to be one of wonder and mystery and excitement. Sure, there’s danger lurking around every bend and hiding in every shadow, but there is also a certain beauty that is lurking just beneath the surface of this seemingly terrible place. Lorenzo De Felici does an amazing job bringing transporting readers to Oblivion with rich and vivid highly-detailed illustrations that do more than just allow the reader to see Oblivion; De Felici’s illustrations allow readers to experience Oblivion.

The overall reading experience offered by Oblivion Song #1 is stunning, but, what impresses me more so than just this book’s look or feel, is the promise that it makes to readers to continue to excite and entertain for issues to come.

Oblivion Song #1 is unlike anything that I’ve read and I cannot recommend it enough to comic book readers, new and old alike, that are looking for something to wake them up and remind them why they love comic books. Do yourself a favor and read this book…

The Bottom Line:

Oblivion Song is a fresh and exciting new series from comic book heavyweight Robert Kirkman; Oblivion Song #1, an intense and visually impressive debut, stands out as one of Image’s best and most promising new series. The concept is rock-solid and the execution is flawless. Oblivion Song #1 is an absolute must-read for comic book readers who are eager to experience something new.
