Titans Annual #1 Review

Reminiscent of a Saw film, the concept for this issue is great, but a good comic book needs more than just a solid concept to be worth reading, right?

So, what’s Titans Annual #1 about? From the publisher:

“When Dick, Wally, Donna and Garth awaken in an unfamiliar place, they find themselves face-to-face with their mentors: Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman! Allied together against a common foe, the mentors and protégés must race against the clock to unlock the secret of their current predicament and save the planet from an alien invasion!”

I would be very wrong if I said that Titans Annual #1 isn’t worth reading because believe me, it is, but unfortunately, Dan Abnett doesn’t make the most out of the extra time that he has with his readers thanks to the extended page count. The story here doesn’t need any set-up, in fact, that’s what draws me to it. In my mind, stories that start with little, to no background information are the best stories. I like to be tossed into the midst of a good story, not lulled into a savory plot. And with Titans Annual #1, the potential for this was there, but thanks to a few wasted pages early on, there was a stunt in momentum, and the issue never took off.

Minkyu Jung’s artwork was rock-steady throughout the issue, and I especially appreciate how Jung made the scenes where our heroes were standing around feel interesting. When the tempo picked up a bit, Jung’s artwork took off and made the issue that much better.

Trimming some of the fat from Titans Annual #1 would have made it better, but, it was a worthwhile read nonetheless, and I am looking forward to what happens next.

The Bottom Line
Titans Annual #1 has several things going for it, but it's a bit too long, and while the ending leaves one asking questions, it's also rather unsatisfying.
Yes!
Minkyu Jung’s artwork brings the book to life
No...
Fat needs to be trimmed, as this issue doesn't make the most out of the extra pages it's been allotted
