What’s there to say about the Man of Steel? DC’s white knight never really grabbed my attention. I liked Christopher Reeve in the movies, and the cartoon wasn’t bad, but other than that Supes just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t know if it’s because he’s too powerful, he’s too wholesome, or because his stories always seem very black-and-white. But, if The Brazen Bull has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes all it takes is one good story to create a fan.
“Superman black” part one! A “Superman Reborn Aftermath” tie-in! As the smoke clears the Kents are faced with leaving Hamilton to go back to Metropolis, but someone or something doesn’t want them to leave! Batman and Robin discover something is mysteriously wrong with the son of Superman—he’s losing his powers!
WHAT THE FUCK?!? Is the whole series like this, because if it is, I wish someone would have told me sooner. I don’t know if it’s because Batman is in this issue, but Superman #20 was a lot darker than I was expecting. Patrick Gleason and Peter J. Tomasi took the story from small town daydream to ominous foreboding, to nightmare territory. I can’t wait to see where they take us next.
Gleason is also the artist for this issue and he draws exactly what you would think a Superman comic should be. The page layout is great from start to finish. It’s impossible to get bored with this issue because almost every page is different. I’ve already flipped through a second and third time just to look at the artwork. John Kalisz’s color work sets the mood for every scene. You don’t even have to read it to get swept away in the ride the creative team is taking us on.
