What begins with the burning of cane fields in Mexico descends into the underworld of cartels and kidnapping. A couple on the run are drawn into this madness and find that they can never be free of whatever past it is that they are trying to escape. “El Doctor Y La Asesina” must use their skills though all they wished to do was hide.
The tone is dark and the action swift and we see quite soon that there is more to be seen than a drug war. Death and mutilation to be sure, but there is a chilling supernatural element that is only beginning to be revealed.
Mackiewicz brings the tension to the forefront without revealing too much this early in the series. There are hints about the powers in play and the mysteries that abound, but what we see is the violence, the horror and the love. His smart dialogue and rich characters make this a gripping suspense story from the very beginning. The action is immediate, the threat is real even if no one knows for sure what is behind it all.
The stark colorings of yellows and browns vividly portray the parched and bitter terrain perfectly setting the scene. Walter plays with shadow and light and adds heat and chills with his contrasts and blurs.
The Bottom Line:
There is good and evil in the world, but what we notice are the things in between. Gasolina shows what it is like to struggle to live between worlds.
